Lotus Goes on a Diet

Lotus has developed a lightweight passenger car, and the brand has released images of the car...

Lotus has revealed some details on its new lightweight passenger car concept, and the main focus of the concept is on saving weight and thus maximising design efficiency.

Lotus Engineering’s study concluded that it is possible to lower the mass of a conventional mainstream vehicle by 38% though the use of lightweight materials and efficient design for only a 3% rise in cost by 2020.

A mid-sized crossover, the Toyota Venza, was used for the study. The result of the study is two prototypes that are viable for 2017 and 2020. The car viable for 2017 was built using mass-market technology and, excluding the powertrain, weighs 21% less, while the cost was 2% lower.

Furthermore, it was concluded by Lotus that all the materials used in its 2020 study will be commercially viable and that the reduced weight could reduce fuel consumption by as much as 23%. The 2020 car has 211 parts, while the original Venza has over 400 parts.

Also, the Venza is 100% steel and the 2020 car is only 7% steel. The rest of it is made up of aluminium, magnesium and composite materials.
